Lilypad – Floating Ecopolis for Ecological Refugees

It’s common knowledge that the planet is warming, ice caps are melting, and water levels are rising. The international scientific community predicts that a temperature elevation of 1°C will lead to a water rise of 1 meter, resulting in massive land loss and the displacement of millions of people world wide. Vincent Callebaut, a visionary Belgian architect, is responding to this inevitability with his proposal LILYPAD, A Floating Ecopolis for Ecological Refugees.

we are definitely going towards that direction in the future.

a modern Waterwolrld!!

I think it’s a great idea! But how will this stand against natures forces? Looks as if it gets flips over it’s not flipping back, hahaha. But this is only 2010 were looking at this “Global Warming” thing happening in a bunch of years from now. By then I hope that we will be on another planet!

lol i wish earth turns earth not hell, all this structures attract but not worth !

Wonderful, I am wondering if you can built it in Indonesia

What a horrendous piece of built garbage! Could anyone be more insensitive to the environment than this! These monstrosities are being placed in the most ecologically sensitive and damaging locations on Earth – the reef! Didn’t these folks even watch “Finding Nemo”?

All those people in these hives: 1) Create an enormous need for clean air and energy without producing heavy concentration CO2 exhaust and other byproduct of energy production, 2) these folks will also require a tremendous amount of clean potable water (for consumption), 3) they will also be in short supply of food, especially fresh fruit to avoid scurvy 4) and they will also be producing an equally gigantic amount of human fecal matter (in addition to other waste management issues such concentrations produce)… all of which will go where? Oh yes, on fish of reef.

These are repulsive, floating football stadium resorts trying to pass themselves off as environmentally sensitive architecture…they are as environmentally sensitive and architecturally attractive as an aircraft carrier.

well said ricardo!!!!!!!

This on and under water world could be and probably is one of the solutions but only for the rich if you want my opinion. All in all its just an elaborated biosphere.

ricardo’s point could be a bit exaggerating. Those instances he cited could technically be engineered if these structures were to be built “hypothetically”. taking advantage of solar energy can help power a desalination plant for potable water supply along with central cooling district that will produce clean air needed by the settlers. in terms of food supply a green house can also be provided to alleviate the shortage. if carried out systematically
“gigantic amount of human fecal matter” can be processed into bio-chemical compounds which can also be used as fuel. well i don’t have all the answers but my point is that these factors ricardo cited can scientifically be solved if not full , will have very minimal impact on the environment.

ACTUALLY IT’S SAD IF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT WILL COME TO THE POINT WHERE WE WILL HAVE TO USE THESE DESIGNS FOR US TO SURVIVE.

Settle down Ramos its clearly not a ‘built’ work but a theoretical study of how a fully discrete and self contained bio-sphere could be realised architecturally. This isn’t a science project- leave your ignorant criticisms to those more qualified to discuss the intricacies of a self-contained ecosystem

William…. ‘This isn’t a science project’, I’m not sure if that is completely correct.

Every project an engineer, architect, planner or respective inventor generates if it is to be a weel considered one, must consider all aspects of design.

And that includes science.

Everything Ramos says has extreme relevance.

But I do agree with you also William as this is only theoretical; and so such suggestions should be considered always to improve such designs.

i hope not only the concept, i really want it happen n will built in the future…this is awesome concept…^^b

“NICE”

hi.

This could do for everyone to survive the floods and sinking of landmasses. A city build into a ship.

Aral sea?

refugees? more like millionaires…

I think we’re not helping the environment here… and besides this will trigger a lot of people of becoming a future pirates.. I should say.
